The Siaya Community Library (SCL) is a project of Integrated Development Africa Program (IDAP). The Library was initiated by American Friends of Kenya Inc., a USA based organization that build Kenyan leadership in education and library development. In July 2012 AFK donated and shipped in a container of books, library shelving and supplies from US. The donation from AFK had already given birth to Siaya Community Library which has slowly developed as a strong facility in Siaya County, its the first in the District and one of its kind. There has also been help that was accorded by Kenyan local publishers, the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, Kenya Literature Bureau and Phoenix Publisher in the form of books for Primary and Secondary school going students.
The Siaya Community Library has grown over the last 7 months both in number of registered members and daily attendance. Hence the library hopes to construct a new ultra modern Resource Centre which is likely to open its doors to the users at the beginning of March 2014. It will provide a full range of high quality services based on both print and electronic media to the community, lecturers, students, teachers, bankers, Lawyers, members of Civil Society Organization and the entire Siaya county.
Having been entered in the 2013 Maktaba Library of the Year competition – in the community libraries category- in Kenya which was held at the Kenya National museums, the Siaya Community Library emerged third overall nationally, and this put Siaya county way ahead in library services provision in Kenya.
The occasion was graced by among others the CEO of Kenya Vision 2030 Mr. Mugo Kabati, The Federal Republic Of German Charge d’Affaires as well the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Culture and Arts.
